🎭 A Theatre That Feels Like Home: Kelly’s Story

At Facebook, we’re proud to celebrate the stories that bring people together—and few stories capture the magic of community quite like this one from Kelly Maki Hackman, a devoted supporter of the arts and a beloved member of the Richey Suncoast Theatre family.

Kelly’s love for theatre began as a child, mesmerized by her first play. That spark never faded. Over the years, her connection to the arts deepened—culminating in a wedding on the very stage of the Richey Suncoast Theatre, and later, a seat on its board. But it was a recent experience with her niece Ava that reminded her just how powerful and uplifting community theatre can be.

Ava attended a weeklong summer camp at the theatre, where she was cast as Ursula in The Little Mermaid. Watching her niece perform with confidence and joy was a proud moment—but what truly moved Kelly was what happened next.

When Ava decided to audition for The Wizard of Oz, Kelly accompanied her. What she witnessed during those auditions was nothing short of magical: a room full of strangers cheering each other on, lifting up a nervous performer who forgot her lyrics, and creating a space where everyone—regardless of experience—felt supported and celebrated.

“In a world where everything seems to be a competition… this group of eclectic individuals… showed me that it’s not competition. That we are all human, and by design we are caring and want to see others succeed.”

Kelly’s story is a beautiful reminder of what makes community theatre so special. It’s not just about the performances—it’s about the people, the encouragement, and the shared belief that everyone deserves a moment to shine.
