Nearly a century after first opening its doors, the Richey Suncoast Theatre has been recognized as one of Pasco County's most treasured institutions.

The theatre has been named the recipient of the 2026 Florida's Sports Coast Legacy Award, presented during the organization's Annual Tourism Banquet. It is the highest honor Florida's Sports Coast bestows — reserved for the businesses, people, and historic places that visitors remember, return to, and feel connected to year after year.

For us, this one is personal.

Since opening as the Meighan Theatre on July 1, 1926, this building has been a gathering place for generations of New Port Richey. Live performances, education programs, community events, and decades of careful preservation have kept the lights on and the stage alive. The Legacy Award honors that continuity — and the people who made it possible.

"This award belongs to the generations of volunteers, performers, staff, and supporters who have helped make the theatre a lasting part of New Port Richey," said Susie Saxe, Executive Director.

"Every production represents countless hours of work from people who care deeply about this theatre," added Jess Glass, Creative Director. "To see that dedication recognized is incredibly meaningful — and a reminder of the impact the arts can have on a community."

The recognition comes at a meaningful moment. As the theatre approaches its 100th anniversary, the award stands as a testament to its lasting role in Pasco County's culture, community, and tourism story.

To everyone who has ever taken the stage, sold a ticket, painted a set, or filled a seat — thank you. This is your award, too.
